1x1 01:55
One by one, two again Dangling loose again And slipping away The lips and eyes we memorized One by one, taste it Careful now not to waste it Perfectly lonely
2.
Agios 03:49
It’s a tall kind of love Built on top of a boulder With the heavy horizon coming down on our shoulders Touch the ground where we stand Tell the chorus to answer Oooh let go You see me as a seesaw Tipping the extremes Sometimes suspended, swayed by a chance wind A fickle girl, a changing tongue Sometimes I miss all at once Full body, desperately Everyone I have ever loved Splayed out like a starfish Immobile, this love Is a cold clay I’m not saying it’s the truth It goes something like that Well a man’s pain flattens the way When it hollers down the mountain With the grace of a giant And I know that you’re scared of the growing silence Oooh, seams coming undone I saw you clinging to some Doing so low that I saw double In the blinding sun Who saw? Who knows? It’s true I might find solace in an empty room But at least my eyes are open I’ll stare straight into its belly Baby you’re talking in circles and the curves make me dizzy
3.
Ines 03:24
Ines, I’m watching you with dread I feel it in my knees and I am underwater Ines Dreamless- I’m watching you and I cannot move Blue and green red A fire dread Dreamless- ha! I wanna be, anonymously Like the coins in your pocket like the holes in your stocking Ines Was it a fire or was it just a dance I don’t know Ines Blur in the mirror, your breath on the back of my neck I don’t know Ines Was it a fever or was it just a bust I don’t anything anymore Ines Ines I’m watching you with dread Ines Ines I am underwater Like the coins in your pocket like the holes in your stocking Ines Was it a fire or was it just a dance I don’t know Ines Blur in the mirror, your breath on the back of my neck I don’t know Ines Was it a fever or was it just a crush I don’t anything Ines anymore

You tricked me with your flickering eyes I didn’t realize those are your everyday eyes Come closer, let me see how they change Warm and sleepy goes haunted blue Maybe you can’t help it And it was a clear view cut like granite ledges and charcoal sketches In bold and daring, sweeping motions Carelessly landed and I’m all mixed up Maybe we can stop it I want something to hold onto I want control They’re still flickering I want to intervene Persuade them toward me But it’s not my nature and my pride won’t have it This kind of lovesick All kinds of lovesick But you can’t help it (haunted eyes) All kinds of lovesick
5.
Methuen 03:14
And if I saw you there in your thick skin, your blind heaviness bared, honey Would you be angry would you be angry at me If I said I’ll always be between Would you be angry I think You’re fretful with your hands Fumbling looking for a place to land I got nothing but stones and I breathe into them, honest stones And the ways- I might never go back like that was it that And you breathe- I might never go back like that but I did for you I might never go back but I’m looking for cracks So tell me that I’m wise tell me I’m wise Give me a brave smile And I’ll leave and I’ll try But I’ll keep it contained so you can give it a name Something beautiful Something beautiful

Fire Escape 04:24
Take me down to the place on the fire escape Longing eyes summer drive burn slow 4am lie awake with the tin rain sounds Take me there take me there takemethere Cool, bleary bleary eyes Two, your hands reply it cuts right Through, I know waves crash love slow It’s that accidental grace, don’t kill it with words I am a queen Sun playing coyly on our skin It’s a dangerous feeling It’s a sinking in feeling like Oceans I know bleed fast love slow It’s the way that we know it’s the way that we know I’m shaking from this potion I’m down Sweet on salt like a spring runoff It’s the way that we know it’s the way that we know it’s the waythatweknow To live by the sea is to be closer with death (it’s a giving not a taking it’s a giving not a taking)
7.
My Feel 03:10
Lets get some light on us Quickly the day is dying To lift you up and out what am I sacrificing Touch my I’m losing my feel We protect this pain Hold it close and cultivate I’m no longer certain which is yours or my own Which is yours or my own Touch my I’m losing my feel Touch me I’m I heard you call my name Ooh and you said it again Wandering in the churchyard No shoes on darling did I let you starve Slow it down my darling Caught in some current winding Slow it down Caught in some current winding
8.
You got the language on your side You got all the words in the world You got the vision you got the meaning I want to believe in But that was a cold dream I prefer the chatter of birds Illegible and whole Illegible and whole All that I wanted was to dance with you I don’t wanna commit the violence of it (tell me what is right) The violence (you like to) Of putting it in a song You like to give everything a name you like to give everything its place (the violence) But you get carried away All that i wanted was to dance with you People think they know but you’re just a mosquito Draining me out draining me draining me dry I’m gonna fucking burst I’m gonna fucking burst if I hear another word All that I wanted was to dance with you All that I wanted was to really move All that I wanted was to dance with you
9.
Go To Sleep 03:10
Lift me up like I knew you would I cannot get enough I am far too full Lift me up lift me higher still If you stay awake you begin to change I cannot go to sleep I cannot go to sleep I am spinning thread If you stay awake you begin to change Go to sleep I’m not hiding it anymore Go to sleep I’ve had enough So baby don’t dry out you know the drill It will come back to you Baby don’t dry out be very still In time in time in time you’ll learn
10.
Satie Song 03:57
I went to the ocean again with the intent of rinsing my heart out Mouth open, cold air across my teeth like a Satie melody and it calms me down I made a shrine for us of driftwood and cherry pits For the waves to spit and draw into their chaos I know that I let you down Just like my mother dark eyes lit the lavender hills Always looking for fire Always the trace of a stranger Well I can’t erase the strange pale face by the lake Still as glass, you spoke and the lake cracked it was deafening And i can’t shake the ringing from my ears I still can’t shake this ringing from my ears Just like my mother I climbed to the top of the hill We were just looking for fire In the faces of strangers But this is where I come from The grays and the blues The sly wicked child And the lavender hills
11.
Sinking Like 03:02
Walking around a thousand cities I’m sinking in faces and chasing colors Breathing breathing color me blue I am I and I cannot go further boy I cannot go further and I know it thru and thru (why you say I’m having to choose) Sinking in the scenes and I can’t go further than these blues Serpentine blues (than these blues) Sinking in the days between lips moving, mouthing, counting Ooooh walking in the city And I cannot go further in yea I cannot go further yea Into the cold into the throes heaven can’t go I am alone heavy to hold or to let go heavy let go Into the cold overexposed over let go Can we let we go can we let go can we let go Who you said who do you know boy I’m sorry The tin rain falling in sheets collect me collect me collect me I’m going going going yea gone going fishing
12.
Steady Song 04:24
Steady I’m lying in the grass pushing those thoughts back If it’s torn, bring it to the stream and let it run thru the cold Just say so I was gone Telling all my friends this is the way this is the way that I am Only the highs and the lows for me And it overflowed It took me down took me down Overflowed But right now I’m steady like high gold plains untamed Steady in breath, tell high tell it with chest Cmon love love you said so Say it say it say it say Well maybe I know, time’s on wheel I woke I feel the constant change You were on my mind, I want to feel the sink in your hands If we go too fast, I won’t relax you cut my cheek You were on my mind it’s like Cold stones in my hands Right now steady like high gold plains untamed Steady in breath tell high tell it with chest Cmon cmon it’s that love you said so Say it say it say Say it love Say it

about

A striking vocalist whose melodies trace mercurial and richly emotive trajectories, Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Alena Spanger’s debut album Fire Escape—out on March 22 via Ruination Record Co.—is a richly varied collection of songs workshopped in the half-decade since her revered band Tiny Hazard’s breakup. Spanger’s music operates in a space between concrete expression and pre-verbal murmurs, offsetting sharp hooks with unsettling juxtapositions—gasps, muted screams, scrambled electronic blasts. Recalling everything from Joanna Newsom and Björk’s kiss-off anthems to the speak-song of Mary Margaret O’Hara and Life Without Buildings, Fire Escape’s songs take place in the aftermath of emotional upheaval, but also sketch blueprints of a less fraught world, dreaming up idealized realms, both real and imagined.

The album runs the stylistic gamut, moving from otherworldly art songs to anarchic dance-punk anthems to experimental pop tracks interweaving folk melodies, New Age synths, and soulful vocal deliveries. To help build out her ambitious compositions, Spanger reunited with former Tiny Hazard bandmate Ryan Weiner (Not Person), who co-produced and mixed most of the LP. Additional co-producers include Carlos Hernandez (Ava Luna, Carlos Truly) and Winston Cook-Wilson (Office Culture). The album features other beloved NYC performers and composers: Julian Cubillos, teasea, Carmen Quill, Kalia Vandever, and Kitba (Rebecca El-Saleh).
